چکیده

Recent developments in the theory and experiment of QCD hard scattering are described. 1 Preamble: How Perturbative QCD Works This has been an active year for experimental results and theoretical developments in quantum chromodynamics. In this talk I will cover a selection of topics presented at this conference, tied together by the interplay of soft and hard physics. QCD is certainly the most complex component of the standard model at current energy scales, evolving as it does from an asymptotically-free perturbative theory of quarks and gluons at short distances to a confining theory of hadrons at long distances. As experiment and theory become more precise, it becomes both possible and necessary to explore the relations between these two limits. I begin with a short review of how we employ the simplicity of the theory at short distances even in the presence of nonperturbative low-energy dynamics. Thus, let us recall a few recurring themes in QCD theory. [1] Infrared Safety. Our first observation is that there is a class of high-energy cross sections and decay rates that may be calculated directly in perturbation theory. These “infrared safe” Presented at the 28th International Conference on High Energy Physics, July 1996, Warsaw, Poland.

B?J/?(?,K) Decays within QCD Factorization Approach

We used QCD factorization for the hadronic matrix elements to show that the existing data, in particular the branching ratios BR ( ?J/?K) and BR ( ?J/??), can be accounted for this approach. We analyzed the decay within the framework of QCD factorization. We have complete calculation of the relevant hard-scattering kernels for twist-2 and twist-3. We calculated this decays in a special scale ...

Psu/th/118 Spin in Perturbative Qcd; Coherent Hard Diffraction 1

I briefly review: (a) some recent developments in the theory of hard scattering in QCD with polarized beams, and (b) coherent hard diffraction (that is, hard scattering in diffractive events, with the Pomeron behaving in an apparently point-like fashion). 1. Polarized Hard Scattering Interest in polarized hard scattering has increased recently. An important reason is that it appears feasible to...

Evolution of Color Exchange In QCD Hard Scattering

In QCD hard scattering cross sections, the color content of the underlying hard scattering evolves with a factorization scale. This evolution is controlled by an anomalous dimension matrix, specific to each hard-scattering reaction. Anomalous dimensions are determined from the renormalization of products of ordered exponentials of the gauge field, which describe the coherent radiation of gluons...

On the Resummation of Singular Distributions in QCD Hard Scattering

We discuss the resummation of distributions that are singular at the elastic limit of partonic phase space (partonic threshold) in QCD hard-scattering cross sections, such as heavy quark production. We show how nonleading soft logarithms exponentiate in a manner that depends on the color structure within the underlying hard scattering. This result generalizes the resummation of threshold singul...

The ηgg Vertex with Arbitrary Gluon Virtualities in the Perturbative QCD Hard Scattering Approach

We study the η ′ g * g * vertex for arbitrary gluon virtualities in the time-like and space-like regions, using the perturbative QCD hard scattering approach and an input wave-function of the η ′-meson consistent with the measured η ′ γ * γ transition form factor. The contribution of the gluonic content of the η ′-meson is taken into account, enhancing the form factor over the entire virtuality...

Hard thermal effective action in QCD through the thermal operator

Through the application of the thermal operator to the zero temperature retarded Green’s functions, we derive in a simple way the well known hard thermal effective action in QCD. By relating these functions to forward scattering amplitudes for on-shell particles, this derivation also clarifies the origin of important properties of the hard thermal effective action, such as the manifest Lorentz ...
